报告摘要:

Non-cellulosic polysaccharides are major components of both the primary and secondary cell walls of all plants that play a crucial role in the organisation and functional properties of walls during both growth and developmental and in their biotechnological applications. Their composition varies significantly between different plant lineages, for example, heteroxylans are the major components of the primary walls of commelinid monocots and the secondary walls of dicots and all monocots, but not gymnosperms. In contrast, the mixed linkage β-glucans (1,3;1,4-β-glucans; MLGs) are major components of the primary walls of only the commelinid monocots. Proteins are a minor but functionally (structurally and biologically) important group that include the ubiquitous hydroxyproline-rich glycoproteins (HRGPs). While the structure of these wall components are largely defined, except for the HRGPs, the molecular details of their biosynthesis is only now being unravelled. If we are to exploit modern molecular and genetic techniques to manipulate plants to construct walls “fit for purpose” we must understand both the transcriptional networks and post-transcriptional events that regulate their biosynthesis and modulation post-deposition.
