Speaker biography:
Prof. Geelen heads HortiCell, a unit of Bioscience Engineering of Ghent University. He has acquired expertise in plant tissue culture, horticulture, and pre-breeding technology. The lab develops molecular tools to advance tissue culture, breeding, and crop yield using biostimulants. This has resulted in collaborative research with the plant breeding industry. Currently, the research is oriented to the identification of genetic factors involved in plant tissue regeneration (root and shoot formation), the development of biostimulants and application in hydroponic cultures, and genetic factors involved in heat sensitivity of pollen formation and fertility.
