Abstract: Two grand challenges face metabolomics that which is most frequently addressed is the poor coverage currently a couple of percent of the plant kingdoms metabolome. Less studied is what all these metabolites are good for. I will provide examples from our work on tomato and Arabidopsis. The former is based on fully elucidating the pathways of glycoalkaloids and phenylpropanoids the latter which will form the major focus went beyond this and characterized in vivo bioactivity of a new class of flavonols. Incidence of natural light stress renders it important to enhance our understanding of the mechanisms by which plants protect themselves from harmful effects of UV-B irradiation, as this is critical for fitness of land plant species. Here I will describe natural variation of a class of phenylacylated-flavonols (saiginols), which accumulate to high levels in floral tissues of Arabidopsis. They were identified in a subset of accessions, especially those deriving from latitudes between 16° and 43° North. Investigation of introgression line populations using metabolic and transcript profiling, combined with genomic sequence analysis, allowed the identification of flavonol-phenylacyltransferase 2 (FPT2) that is responsible for the production of saiginols and conferring greater UV light tolerance in planta. This example of assessing the in vivo role of novel metabolites will be used as a case study to highlight the importance of assessing biological roles of metabolites both within plants and the species which depend upon them to meet their nutritional requirements.

Presentation TitleGenetic Dissection of Plant Metabolic Network

Presentation date: 2018.01.15  10:10-11:20am

Presentation room: Shuhua Hall 800

Abstract: The primary goals of crop plant breeding has focused on improved yield for a long time. As the recent advances in crop genetics and methods for chemical analysis, improving the chemical composition of crop plants, and their application to better understand tolerance and resistance mechanisms, as well as improving human nutrition have drawn more and more attention. My research focused on a major crop-Maize in recent years. Huge diversity of maize and the detailed genomic information make it a model for crop genetic studies. In order to achieve the goal of maize improvement, we devised a long term project of maize molecular breeding on top of different types of population and genetic approaches. Here I will show the dissection of the genetic basis of maize multi-tissue metabolic variation by taking advantage of abundant genetics and metabolic data.
